CompTIA opened the XK1-006 beta exams today. I'm signed up and I'm taking it tomorrow.

As is tradition, I've done my comparison of 005 vs 006 -> https://www.kilala.nl/index.php?id=2609

In short, I'm not a fan of 006.

The changes from 004 to 005 looked pretty good at the time! But now 006 feels messy, it feels like it's trying to do too much and I feel it has lost its focus.

Interesting - while I haven't written the exam yet, when I went through the detailed exam objectives in preparation for the 7th edition of my book, I got the exact same impression. The additions from 005->006 seemed bizarre, while the additions we had moving from 004->005 made excellent sense.

I'm very curious to see which changes you've made to your book!
The structure is still going to be the same because the book is designed to teach Linux key concepts in a logical way. But since my book targets both Linux+ and LPIC-1 (a leftover from when Linux+ was "Powered by LPI"), I'm hoping to just target Linux+ for this next edition. This would allow me to remove some of the unuseful/distracting legacy material that LPIC-1 still has to make way for some of the new material, such as AI (or what I like to call "Grand Theft Autocorrect" ;)).

Isn`t that happening with other Courses as well? A+ or the new Cloud+?
The SME pack way to much in 5 days so, we just scratch the surface instead cover it more in Detail (f.e. something like the Boot Process from power On till Log On Screen).
Sad that not Trainers are also more part of the SME...

Linux+ powered by LPI was at least also a two part Exam..

Oh I don't mean that it's too much for a 5-day class (which it is too!!).

I mean that a number of additions just don't make sense. Linux+ is a Linux systems administration certification. Yes, container platforms and infrastructure as code are generally important to Linux admins, which is why I applauded the conceptual stuff they added to 005. But what they're doing now is either going WAY overboard (by wanting every student to know actual workings of Kubernetes, Docker/Podman, Docker Swarm, OpenTofu, Ansible and Puppet), OR their objectives are just a lie and they pumped up the content to look good.

Plus, AI in a Linux admin exam? I'm against it.

Exactly, the scope is daunting at best.

By focusing on Linux usage (including Git), administration, core network administration, containers, and security, the Linux+ 005 exam had a strong topic base that made it perfect for Linux admins, those looking to move into Cyber, and first-year developers.

Anything beyond that should be separated into a separate exam (and course). Automation, CM, orchestration and the SRE topics you mentioned should really be part of a cloud or devops/SRE certification only.

As for AI, I think Linus Torvalds echos most of us when he said the following a few weeks ago: https://triosdevelopers.com/~jason.eckert/stuff/linusAI.mp4

I've already warned my school that if XK0-006 turns out the way it looks right now, I'm advising we move to a competing examination for our annual Linux classes. We need to stay on-focus.

I can't listen to your MP3 right now... is it this one? -> https://www.theregister.com/2024/10/29/linus_torvalds_ai_hype/

'cause yeah.. to me AI is the new blockchain :(
