    Cybersecurity history

A while ago, I found an old Wiley Cybersecurity book from the early 90s and decided to see what has changed from then until now. I did up a short blog post on the similarities and differences here: https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblog/cybersecurity-in-the-90s/ I'm posting it here as it may make...

Is it beneficial to study for Core 1 and Core 2 together or separately?

Yes, for the simple reason that preparing for one exam is less time-consuming. Students just need to focus on a single set of topics, which encourages them to write the exam sooner than later.

I'm definitely looking forward to writing Data+ (I'm about 90% prepared for it already!)

    A+ Core 1 220-1101 & Core 2 220-1102 Sneak Peek

Looking forward to it! In fact, I'd even give the sneak peek webinar an A+ in advance ;)

    Successful content delivery systems

We also use the Mike Meyers book and give students access to MeasureUP preparation. Mike Meyers also has a video series on LinkedIn Learning too (we have a college-wide membership), and students really like his videos. I can't watch the videos myself though for diet purposes (Mike bears a strong...

That's the big downside. Even though the quality is there, Cengage books are quite expensive - they're like the Apple of the publishing world. I think the main reasons for this are that they are very polished (3 editors, 5 reviewers, bigger pipeline) and come with a ton of educational resources...

    CySA CSO-003 - coming up next 2023?

Ditto here - I thought that CS0-002 was much more industry-tuned than CS0-001, and gave my industry observations on that same survey a few minutes ago for consideration in CS0-003.

I'm actually the tech editor for most other Linux titles (including the Sybex ones), so I really *shouldn't* comment ? But, what I can say, is that my Linux+ Guide to Linux Certification is actually the #1 top-selling Linux textbook in the academic (non-trade) market (3.5 million copies...

I'm going to wait until it's out of beta to write it. I really liked XK0-004 (well-rounded exam, which the previous LPI-based exams were not). And the new objectives are even better and more aligned to the needs of industry for both IT pros and developers, so I'm sure I'll like it. Speaking of...

Great resource for threat hunting & triage

We had a Cybersecurity company that does managed detection and response (in addition to the regular pentesting vulnerability assessments) for other organizations do a guest talk in my class earlier today. It was very interactive and engaging, and they were able to show my class the tools and...

In case you need a lab for introducing microservices & Kubernetes in a Linux+ or Cloud+ course

If anyone wants to watch me walk through parts of this quickstart with the Kitchener Waterloo Linux User's Group, you can find the video at the link below (paste the link into your browser since it seems to preview the first video when I paste the full link here)...

    CentOS future?

It's probably important to note that the distribution you use in class for penetration testing or security assessments is irrelevant, as all of these tools can be installed on any Linux distribution. Kali and Parrot are merely distributions that come preinstalled with many of these tools -...

    Taking Project+ beta?

Very thorough blog post with sage advice on writing Project+ - thanks :)

    CentOS future?

Nearly everything you do on CentOS will work seamlessly on Fedora without modification. So, if you've been using CentOS in labs, you can replace CentOS with Fedora easily. Fun fact: Fedora is the Linux distro that Linus Torvalds uses on all of the computers in his house.

    Taking Project+ beta?

I think I'm going to put in an expense request with my college for this beta (I used to teach the PMP stuff for Boston University on premises here in Canada, so I love writing anything project management-related). What I plan to do to prepare for it is treat the detailed objectives like a...

In case you need a lab for introducing microservices & Kubernetes in a Linux+ or Cloud+ course

Also, if you want to skip Section 1 on building a custom Docker image and pushing it to Docker Hub, you can use the image I made in that section throughout the remainder (jasoneckert/webapp on Docker Hub). While this webapp container is an ARM64-only container I made on an M1 Mac, it will...

    Comptia Exams

I think PowerShell is a great addition to A+ since it's a main management tool for Windows Desktops. And the control structures are very similar to Bash shell programming on Linux. But I believe the focus on A+ is not to be an expert programmer, but merely be able to understand (or trace)...

    The Times They Are a-Changin'

Ditto what Jill said about Cengage, and what Lee mentioned about CompTIA. The last 2 books I wrote for Cengage used an updated style/copyeditor guide that used inclusive language (both the dev editor and copyeditor used this guide when performing edits). Similarly, I noticed that the new...

    Comptia

Our whole college went eBooks exclusively a few years ago with close to zero issues. There's the odd student who grumbles that they prefer printed books, but without a choice, they end up adapting pretty quick and are OK with eBooks after they use them for a while.
