This will go on for a longer period than we are all anticipating. The model is somewhat outdated, but it will change. Just not at the pace we all think it 'should' change.
You brought up 2 good points about business and theoretical applications. The 2 areas that are negated when doing a certification-only route are the theoretical and business applications.
It would be beneficial if certifications covered a greater aspect of those 2 areas. A degree program covers...
The long term benefits for a degree outweigh the cost. But in practice, spending a significant sum for a degree is not a good investment. Yes, certifications will help you get the role. But that is still the exception and not the rule. I would look at programs that marry certifications and...
Not in the near-term. There will still be a need for college degrees. Shifts have happened and still are. The degree model will shift to meet the market and demands. You can look at microcredentials and Prior Learning Assessments as models.
There is still benefit in getting a degree. It still carries a lot of weight when seeking new roles. For those seeking higher certifications, it can lower the barrier on entry. Yes, certain jobs are moving towards a skill-based criteria. But the benefits of having a degree are still prevelant.
@Rick Butler & @Greg Childers , i agree that having a firm prerequisite for certifications would be hard to enforce. But I would look to what others in the field are doing. One example would be the CISSP certification from ISC2. You can complete the certification exam. But if you lack the...
Excellent points @Rick Butler makes. Students will learn the hard way that numerous certifications and no experience are a noxious blend. Experience is a great teacher.
Just because they have the requisite experience doesn't mean they're ready for an advanced certification. If they don't know the core tenants of the advanced certs. It's advantageous to go for the lower level certifications. On the experience side, seeking out adjacent and complementary roles...
A student reach out to me asking about getting the Sec+ certification. They attempted the Net+ exam and failed (scoring a 518). They asked if they can 'skip' over the Net+ and go straight for the Security +. My response was a resounding no. The student did explain that they've completed their...
Hi CINers,
Any information regarding a TTT for PenTest+ 003. I haven't received any emails regarding it. Since it will officially launch on 12/17, I was wondering if any official updates were sent from CompTIA.
Thanks.
Brandon
I have a B.A. in Political Science from Rutgers Univ.-Newark and M.A. in Organizational Leadership from Claremont Lincoln Univ. IMHO, my degree has help both domain knowledge and professionally. It has afforded me additional opportunities to teach college courses aligned to the CompTIA and other...
@Stephen Schneiter ,Are the vouchers still be distributed from the Network+ TTT. I still haven't received mine yet. I'm wondering if others are in the same boat?
Thanks in Advance.
I will say, working in higher education and vocational training. It's not good to run this material in an accelerated fashion for students who like the background or understanding. If they can follow along with the lab instructions from CertMaster, what's the point of having it be instructor...
