A couple of challenges I face are assessing how well students grasp content and student engagement in virtual classes. I constantly seek feedback from my students. In a traditional live classroom, I can observe students' faces and body language, which helps me gauge their understanding. Additionally, I can identify a student who seems to comprehend the material and ask them to 'teach it back' by explaining the concepts in their own words or through personal examples. I can administer a pop quiz five different ways (every person for themselves, teams of 2, half the class versus the other half of the class, every person with shout out to another student (phone a friend), and every person for themselves with an immunity icon (person with the doll gets to assess every answer for correct/wrong). Students like my pop quizzes and tell me that it's often how they remember tough material. That's why I like standing in front (and sometimes in the back) of classrooms. Getting that same level of assessment and interaction in virtual classes is challenging.
