Creating a Positive Learning Environment in IT Classes

Create a Welcoming Environment

• Set the Tone Early: Begin with an introduction session where you outline the goals, expectations, and the importance of inclusivity.

• Personalize Interactions: Learn and use students’ names and acknowledge their unique backgrounds and experiences.

• Accessible Content: Provide materials in multiple formats (videos, transcripts, presentations) to cater to different learning styles and abilities.

Foster Inclusivity

• Encourage Participation: Create a space where students feel safe asking questions and contributing, ensuring all voices are heard.

• Use Diverse Examples: Incorporate examples and case studies that reflect varied cultural and professional contexts.

• Flexible Learning: Allow for asynchronous options or extra time where necessary to accommodate different paces.

1. How do you create a welcoming and inclusive learning environment for your IT students?
2. How do you ensure that everyone feels welcomed and supported?
1. I let everyone know that this is their class, and that I'm just the facilitator.

I have everyone introduce themselves during the first class meeting. Learning
about other classmates has the potential to discover some common bonds right
out of the gate. It's just a natural human trait to want to interact with those that
you feel a common connection!!!

2. I insist that they ask questions!!!

I inform everyone that the more questions that they ask, the more excited I get,
and the more they will learn - it's a win-win!!!

I don't lecture - I discuss!!! Discussions involves the class members - bidirectional
communication!!! The more engaged the learner, the more learning takes place!!!

Deeply appreciating such valuable insightful info

Your student-centered approach is brilliant!............. Encouraging connections, questions, and discussions fosters engagement, ownership, and deeper learning. Well done!

I have my own ideas:

This is the Anti-Gaming Ban Hammer - a necessary artifact of my days in the classroom in 2015 - to remind students that gaming in class was not conducive to learning.
I can see this fantastic legendary Anti-Gaming Ban Hammer belongs to you, only you...... I might need this idea myself: In my classes, gaming occasionally turned into a 'group project' during breaks!😂

In the words of Hikaru Sulu (George Takei, Star Trek): Oh my!!!!!

The ideas expressed by the gentleman in the pic are his personal views,
and do not necessarily reflect the delicate, empathetic, and compassionate
nature of the CIN community P-)

Oh, I don't know, Trevor - I think more instructors may agree with me. I also have a mace and a CAT5 of Nine Tails, also suitable for...getting the point across in a very visible way.

Now, in all actuality, I have seen groups that have utilized gaming in order to build a sense of esprit de corps. and camaraderie. They knew that when I told them to get back to work, despite my comedic way of doing so, they knew that I actually meant business.

I'm hoping these instructors that do agree with you are the ones who are delivering these courses within the penal system!!! That type of pedagogy has no place in public institutions :)

That's a clever way to blend fun and focus! Gaming for teamwork, then back to business😂😂

Public institutions need a more structured and formal pedagogy to ensure effective learning for everyone.
Careful! Sounds a little like you may want to encroach on my academic freedom. From there, you may want to remove my First Amendment right, which academia has nothing to do with.

I'm starting a petition today to halt this idea before it can gain any traction!
Would you be okay with assisting me in the development of this petition, please :)

esprit de corps (noun) - a feeling of pride, fellowship, and common loyalty shared by the members of a particular group.

I had to do a lookup, so I thought I may as well share it with the rest of the community :) :) :)
Thanks for the definition!,.......... Always good to learn something new from you and I appreciate you sharing it with the community

I promise not to make any petitions.... I'm only here to preserve academic freedom, but if it means more breaks and gaming time, I might sign one!
