Sounds like the old CompTIA non-profit association has a new name picked out finally. It also appears that some of the previous staff will be staying with the non-profit, some will be moving to the for-profit, and some will be moving on to other opportunities with other organizations.

"The sale of the CompTIA brand and for-profit business activities resulted in the creation of a substantial endowment that will cover the operating costs of GTIA indefinitely. As a result, membership dues will continue to be subsidized to be kept affordable, and member benefits will remain consistent, including impactful global events like ChannelCon. Through the endowment, GTIA will also have more opportunity to expand charitable giving to organizations doing valuable work in technology and bringing more people into the tech industry around the globe."

And the for-profit entity will be called...?

Well, we know that Todd Thibodeaux will be the CEO of the for-profit CompTIA. GTIA is looking for a new skipper for the helm. And a lot of good people are now looking for work, so if you can, get on LinkedIn and help 'em out!

On another, and perhaps more important note, I'm being deployed for the Information Technology Disaster Resource Center's efforts for the LA - Fire disaster. In the past I've strongly recommended that all of you and your students consider volunteering for this non-profit organization.

The acquisition was made official on Thursday January 9th. GTIA is the official name for the non-profit association moving forward. Kelly Ricker will be leading the association moving forward.

The certification side will be keeping the name CompTIA. The official name will be CompTIA, Inc.

In my retiree volunteer roles (e.g. itdrc.org and diversitycybercouncil.org), I use the information below as an aid in defining the nature of the entity. Should I expect CompTIA's URL to be modified to reflect comptia.com?

The main difference between .org and .com domains is their intended purpose and how the public perceives them:

  • .org
Short for "organization", this domain is typically used by non-profit organizations, educational institutions, and advocacy groups. It conveys a sense of seriousness, credibility, and community involvement.
  • .com
Short for "company", this domain is typically used by commercial businesses, eCommerce sites, and other commercial entities. It conveys a sense of professionalism and trustworthiness.

In a way - this kind of saddens me. I think being a non-profit organization was a strong selling point because there wasn't any corporate interest out there, pulling on things. And while I hope the investors aggressively keep the neutrality, I think there will always be that specter where organizations would pull things one way or another.

I also feel for the folks that are now in the unemployment pool. CIN'ers, I don't ask much of you, but I'm going to ask all of you - if you are connected to these people, say on LinkedIn or something, connect and communicate with them. Support them as they search for good employment opportunities. And don't just forget about them after a couple weeks - because we have ALL been there - where we feel on the out, where no one cares as we keep kicking the trees for a job to come up.

Yes, send these folks whatever leads you uncover, but staying in touch, reaching out every few days, or more often if you see them struggling, and let them know that their well-being is actually important to you, not the cursory social-media fluff we've exchanged for real community in our world these days.

Take the time. Reach out. Because one day, it will be you who needs support - and karma might be a real thing.

Mad respect for you, Steve. I totally would love to do this, myself. It would be a great change of pace, putting skills to use somewhere in a meaningful task.

I jokingly sent a message to a neighbor explaining that I'm on a tentative "hold", waiting for the arrival of Starlink products, but letting them know that I'm looking forward to a 5-start quality Roadway Inn (see attached photo). I shared with other ITDRC volunteers the following message:

I'm spending my time as I wait for further deployment instructions to take ITDRC courses at the website below. I'm amazed at the amount of learning content. I suggest other Region 9 volunteers do the same.... https://web.edapp.com/home

Always striving to learn more, this is a great use of my time......
