Do you teach students that encoding is the same as encrypting?

Nope. Encoding implies that the process is reversible and changes the information formatting for some technical reason. One common technical reason when you encode ASCII text into octal or binary for transmission over a network. You encode data written to storage. That data can be easily...

    Networking Concepts in Security+

I have a list of Net+ concepts that are covered in Sec+ and have developed notes and videos that I share with students that are not confident with their understandings of those topics. I call these concepts out as being Net+ and tell students if they have questions to let me know so I can...

Great point Greg. People ask me why I focus on Sec+, CySA+, and CASP+. Why don't I pursue Network+ and Project+ since I worked in those areas in the past. I started curating my certifications back in 2020. Making sure that I can maintain the ones that are important to me and that I enjoy...

    Classroom Signage

When I taught in a classroom I always sought out relevant posters and made sure they were in place students would see them entering and exiting the room and near the break room area. Great conversation starter and for reinforcement of concepts. A great source used to be SANS and some of the...

    AIPS and PIDS?

Michael, Sorry to read you are down on CompTIA Support. They are really working hard to try and make the product great. In this instance I believe that the SME may be CompTIA staff and the Security+ Product Manager will probably be looking at this thread. On behalf of all of us CINers thank...

    AIPS and PIDS?

Probably a typo. What would the answer be if an AIPS is a HIPS and a PIDS is a NIDS?

    2023 Years in Review!

Great thread! I'm going to respond differently. In 2023 ... I taught 12 courses. Security+ and CySA+. That was just under 200 students. My student's 'I passed the exam' response rate was just under 20%. I worked with 6 private training clients. Security+, CySA+, and CISSP. 100% of my...

**Chinese hackers allegedly target US infrastructure as 'Volt Typhoon' **

As cybersecurity professionals we should all understand that attribution - linking malicious activities to subjects or threat actors - is very difficult in that we are often using latent not direct evidence. Recall that latent evidence requires some analysis and interpretation. Direct evidence...

    *** Tech Fortress Thursday ***

Great query! Here is my response. #1 - Analysis - Objective: Looking at and understanding the opportunity to be addressed or solved. Defining the bounds of the opportunity. The potential inputs and desired outputs. Analysis ends with an opportunity document. That opportunity document...

    Most "Effective" Cybersecurity Defense

Security Awareness Training. When utilized successfully, training users has the potential to reduce the overall threat surface of an organization by raising user awareness of both malicious and non-malicious threats.

TTT Soap Box: Breaking the Ice!

Greetings Fellow Instructors! In advance of the upcoming Security+ TTT series I wanted to ask the Instructor Community for their ideas, thoughts, and opinions about some of the tools of our instructional trade. How do you 'break the ice' with the students in your classes? What do you do as...

    Share slides with students

I'm a big tweaker, so I always share a PDF version of any slides that I tweaked with my students. That's probably 20 out of the 21 SY0-601 CertMaster lessons. I don't share PPTs.

    Started studying for Linux+

Those free Cisco Network Academy Linux courses are actually NDG Linux courses. Only the Linux Essentials course is free. They are great for learning about commands and use. I'd suggest you need to learn more to pass the Linux+ exam.

    Started studying for Linux+

Agree with setting up a Linux machine but I'd suggest using VirtualBox, installing a Linux distro from scratch, and then downloading and running other distros from OSBoxes dot org. You need to know Ubuntu cold. Use it everyday. I also studied using ArchLinux and Kali. Update the OS. Install...

    CIN TTT Series - Security+ SY0-701

I think the idea of being able to compare the content, methods, and tools would be valuable but don't believe there is a voucher for the TestOut LabSim track. I agree we should probably develop a presentation comparing the tracks. Are you doing anything in December?
