CompTIA’s Role in Cybersecurity Careers

If you look at job descriptions online, virtually none of them ask for CySA+ or PenTest+ for cybersecurity roles. That is not to say that the certs are without value. You can learn a lot of useful information while preparing for the examinations. But to be honest, most recruiters have never heard of these two certifications. Most recruiters only know the CompTIA trifecta of A+/Network+/Security+.

Security+ is the single-most requested cybersecurity certification, with CISSP being the second-most requested. However, Security+ is considered foundational level while CISSP is considered expert-level.

Great points!...... Yes it's true Security+ and CISSP are the most recognized even though CySA+ and PenTest+ still add value for specialized roles, like SOC Analyst or Pen Tester, they also align with frameworks like DoD 8570—but do you see those certifications gaining more recognition in the future?

That depends upon how well the new owners of CompTIA market those certifications. There are a lot of unknowns.

Hello CINners,

How do you explain to students the importance of certifications like Security+ or CySA+ or Pentest+ when competing for cybersecurity roles?
Have them to take a look at some of the existing job postings, so that they can see the certifications mentioned. If after seeing certain certifications mentioned in job opportunities, time and time again, and they're still not convinced, then you may as well do what a boxer's manager would do, when he sees that his man has no chance of competing in the boxing match: Throw in the towel!!!!

Haha, that’s one way to put it! But seriously, showing students those job postings is a game changer............They'll understand that certifications like Security+, CySA+, or Pentest+ are frequently the key to even getting a foot in the door once they see how frequently they're cited. I suppose it's time to give up if they're still not persuaded! 😄

You can lead a horse to water, but you can't make it drank (that sounds better than "drink") P-)
