Hi all,

I am just wondering if anyone has any great ideas of what I might be able to do with elementary aged kids at an community event. I am looking for a quick 5-7 minute activity that the kids can do and learn a bit about cyber security. Previously I have had them make a cipher wheel and learn how to use it. I like the ability for them to take something physical home too. I am trying to also go low tech as it is an outdoor event and rather not have to deal with power or weather.

thanks.

This is definitely in CompTIA Spark territory. You'll want to reach out them. https://www.comptiaspark.org/

Something you might want to consider is a short 3-5 question true or false game focusing on age appropriate cyber awareness. Ask questions about using the Internet and sharing information like your name, your address, your birthday, etc,.. with people who you don't know. Work in the concept of non-repudiation in that once you say something and put it on the Internet it can be there forever. Address cyber bullying. Create some awareness around picture taking - do you know the person taking your picture? Are they asking you to do something you don't want to do? CISA has a great presentation on the topic:

Take a couple of these ideas and put them on your organization's hand out cards. Or if you are short on time create a jeopardy game using a white board, question cards and index cards covering the answers. Suggestion: run them by some children and parents of your target audience. You want to connect positively with both audiences.

I have used the caesar cipher wheel for elementary. Have them cut them out and put together (bottom disc of letters with top disc of numbers) and they can use for understanding and doing their own secret message. There is also the cyberpatriot ELEMENTARY SCHOOL CYBER EDUCATION INITIATIVE kit that is excellent! - https://www.uscyberpatriot.org/Pages/Special Initiatives/Elementary-School-Initiative.aspx
Forgot to also add a GREAT card game that has levels from K-12. Ask for a class copy - https://cias.utsa.edu/ctd/
