Philadelphia Area Adjunct Instructor Needed - A+ (1101 and 1102) - Fall 2024

Hello,

Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia, PA, is currently seeking an adjunct instructor (or instructors) for Fall 2024 interested in teaching in-person Introduction to Hardware and Perpherials (A+ 1101) and Applied Operating Systems (A+ 1102). The courses are scheduled to run MWF and are in 1-hour blocks. Time is to be determined. There is an opportunity to teach one day a week synchronously/asynchronously. A Master Degree or Higher is necessary.

Opportunities for teaching in Spring 2025 may also be available for Database Design/Implementation and Database Security. Both courses have the potential for DataSys+ integration.

Good point. I have more than 20 years of experience. How much does the average Master's Degree graduate have?
20 minutes maybe? 🥸 but my guess would be way less than that.
All jokes aside; it’s based in the institution requirements they have to meet for anyone to teach any courses.
I used to teach at a 4-year degree college back in the early 2000’s that didn’t have the stringent restrictions in place ( mainly because it was a small 5 campus private college)
They then got bought out by a much larger entity and then forced the requirement of master or better to teach.. at that time I didn’t have any, only certifications. So then I went into banking for a while… 🙃
Degrees are nice to have when you are teaching at universities, some of them will allow you to teach certification classes without them however.. sound like this one is not one of them.
I’m sure they will find qualified master degree folks that want to work MWF for 1 hour at a time onsite.

For me, it is 1992 onward, with WordPerfect 5.1 and MS Excel v3.0. They could end up with a Master's Degree holder who is not fully versed in modern technologies :rolleyes:
 
Asking for a masters degree is saying the organization is not conscious of 2024 realities. People are not going to college to get a bachelors degrees and then continuing on for a masters degrees. College has become cost prohibitive for even the most ambitious STEM minded learners. They are gaining workplace skills elsewhere.

We are helping people pursue certifications. They don’t have the time or money to get bachelors degrees and masters degree. I don’t have time for a masters degree. I’d rather pursue a certification that is more advanced than what I currently hold.

I suggest those who are posting job openings abandon the masters degree requirement. They can instead ask for proof of advanced knowledge. CASP+ and CISSP would surely qualify. A masters degree from 2007 probably should not IMO.

US National Cyber Director Harry Coker, Jr. announced that the US government's official policy is skills-based hiring rather than requiring a degree for technical roles.

The National Cyber Director announced that the Biden-Harris Administration is leading by example and will overhaul the federal hiring process to become fully skills-based for an entire series of technical employees. Thanks to work by the Office of Personnel Management (OPM), the Federal Government will transition the Information Technology Management series, called the 2210 series, to skills-based hiring principles and practices. The 2210 job series represents IT workers in every federal agency and a majority of the federal IT workforce accounting for nearly 100,000 current federal employees. The framework announced today will take effect next summer.

    In California's community college system, for career-type courses (what we teach and other fields like, welding, construction, automotive, etc.), you can teach by having an associates degree and six (6) years of work experience. This relaxed requirement makes sense, given the fact that teaching skills go beyond trade skills.
