You can still see them on sidewalks and buildings.... Seen them in Nashville, DC, Denver, and other areas...
We must travel in different circles because I've never seen them in any US city at any point. I assumed that it happened a few times in the late 1990s but died off rapidly.
 
I always explain that now we really don’t need warchalking because most network providers like McDonalds, Target, and Chick Fil A now post the wireless network info right on their own front doors! No need for chalk drawings when they already print a sticker with the info on it themselves.
