Routing Issues

I recently dealt with a client’s network outage caused by a misconfigured router. I had to dig into the routing tables and found that one static route was pointing to the wrong gateway. Once corrected, the network was restored. Have you encountered similar routing issues in your teaching, and how do you explain routing table troubleshooting to your students?
When I've taught routing, I always started on the whiteboard, building a pseudo table to teach the very basics and move on from there.

I've always taught that if you can avoid a static entry on a routing table, if there's any way, do so - routing protocols are smarter. And if you have to have a static entry, document the heck out of it, so someone that comes behind knows. The way I see it, these days, if you have to use a static entry, you're trying to do something unconventional or weird.

That's where the documentation comes in - because "well, it was a good idea when I put it in there" will turn into "what the heck was this fool thinking?". In the OP's example, I think that entry was correct at one time, that it was working once and then one day, it wasn't working. Perhaps the gateway was changed, but no one bothered to look at the static routes in the other routers.

However, these bugs are also great to teach. Using something like GNS3 to build a network up and test with, has been a mainstay for me over the years.

My explanation begins by having students to look at the logs on the router!

RSA Encryption

RSA encryption is still part of the team roster, but it's getting on in age.
What's the up-and-coming successor to this once-upon-a-time
perennial all-star?

If you do provide a response to this query, some evidence to support
your input would be most appreciated. Opinions and feelings don't
qualify :)

Happy Women's History Month!!!
Elliptic Curve Cryptography (ECC) is the leading contender as the successor to RSA, thanks to its efficiency, scalability, and better resilience in a world with advancing computational power.

Help for Student re: Request for Accommodation due to English as a Second Language

Ok, thanks, @Stephen Schneiter. More specifically:

  • I teach a Canadian cohort A+. There is a Pakistani woman who became a Canadian citizen two years ago who is newer to English
  • Other vendors, such as AWS, allow for a 30-minute extension of time for people who are taking the certification in English when their first language isn't English.
  • We went to the site, and all we see is a request for an extension of time if you have a learning or cognitive deficiency
  • We would like to know if CompTIA allows for the extension of time for those who struggle with English
The problem is, learners are supposed to take Core 1 all of last week. She was trying to pull her studies together quietly without alerting the boot camp that she was struggling. I found out when I pressed her for details of her exam date what was going on. We were on the phone for three hours last night, and we were not able to get anyone to answer this question. She needs to take this exam asap, and we finish Core 2 on September 29th, and she will need to sit for Core 2 on September 30th. Time is of the essence, because the boot camp is a train and deploy situation.

Can you help assist with resolving this? She has her passport, and even when she was talking with the CompTIA and Pearson Vue customer support, her English is broken enough to where she had to repeat things multiple times. We can prove she struggles with English. But she understands it well, and she has demonstrated in class she knows the materials. She just needs the extra time. Thanks!

Help for Student re: Request for Accommodation due to English as a Second Language

Hi @dlross, I am going to reach out to some folks to make sure you can get some answers. However, I need to make sure I understand what you are wanting content or for the exam itself. It is for the exam, that can only be done through Pearson Vue when registering for the exams. I believe there is a proof statement requirement. I will talk with our certification team to verify.
