Academy Instructors... Salary?

I hope this is not in the wrong place, but I was looking to see if anyone had any experience or provide guidance. My institution is starting an Academy (think bootcamp for high school seniors) that will be cover three courses of Java Programming thru Oracle iLearn, CompTIA A+ and Security+ over a highly immersive 17 week session. We are just now (probably late already) looking to fill this (these) positions with part-time to possibly full-time position depending on experience.

My first question for everyone is would would you expect for a salary for such a position. It would be on location, 8 am - 4 pm, Mon-Fri. The A+ and Security+ portion would be a total of three weeks out of the entire session and would be done in between the three Java courses. This could be filled in multiple ways, so what might be a good starting point for each? A+ Instructor, Security+ Instructor, Java Instructor (Foundation, Fundamental, Programming I) What types of benefits would you expect if a contractor?

My second question would be is there anyone out there that has went thru the ilearn curriculum?

Discussion on a Reported Challenge in Finding Cybersecurity Employment

I'll start the discussion by asking that you read the following article that was posted on LinkedIn:

When I completed my reading of the article, agreeing with many of the points it raises, I asked myself why Mr. Bechtel, with an obvious ability to effectively communicate, remains unemployed. Going through the sort of investigative process I would expect most of us to do, my initial thought was to look at his LinkedIn profile to view both education and certifications. I suggest that you do the same (https://www.linkedin.com/in/kbechtel2/ ).

My initial impression (and I apologize to Lee and others from Texas), is the cowboy hat isn't a good thing. Maybe that's a California view, but I suspect people from other states across the nation have a similar view. I view the content in the experience section of the profile as impressive. The weakness in his profile exists in the education section and the licenses/certification sections. What I'm sensing is an attitude that discounts the value of formal education (degrees, certificates), and industry-recognized certifications. We know that isn't an uncommon view, but one that I believe serves as a "red flag" when it comes to an individual's chances of getting a job.

I've reached out to Mr. Bechtel and asked that we connect via LinkedIn. If it happens, I'll let you know how the conversation goes.

Use Official CompTIA Resources to Teach Online? (ie Udemy

Hello CIN!

Currently I teach face-to-face CompTIA A+, Net+ and Security+ for Collin College and other institutions in the Dallas, TX area. We list the official CompTIA book as required for the class and use the slides provided with the CompTIA Instructor edition of the books. (I also plan to build and start using the labs in the CompTIA books as well.) So far I have been impressed with the official CompTIA resources.

In addition to teaching in person, I have been considering the idea of possibly teaching some "online/recorded" classes for Cybrary.it and/or Udemy. I would love to be able to use the Official CompTIA books and resources to teach these classes if it is allowed.

Do any of the other instructors on CIN have experience with this? Can the Official CompTIA instructor materials be used to conduct online courses for sites like Cybrary.it and Udemy without violating CompTIA's copyright, terms of service or anything else applicable?

Thanks in advance!

Shane

ITDRC and My Experience in Abaco, Post-Hurricane Disaster Recovery

Wanted to share a link to my blog where I posted about my experiences last month that resulted from an ITDRC deployment to Abaco in the Bahamas in conjunction with the post-hurricane Dorian disaster. You can read about it at:

On Wednesday I gave a talk about the experiences to around 100 IT students at Cypress College. Today I'm appearing at an ICT Advisory Committee meeting where I'll be providing a similar presentation. All of you should consider joining the ITDRC (www.itdrc.org), and get your students, as a resume and experience builder, to do the same.

No Cost Cybersecurity Learning Resources from Texas A&M and FEMA

Not sure if I provided this information in the past, but in partnership with FEMA, Texas A&M University as produced a series of classes that focus on cybersecurity and are, in my opinion, a series of twelve (12) courses worth taking a look at for student use. The price (FREE) is well worth the value of the learning content. See the table I produced, detailing the courses, along with their descriptions by clicking on the link below or accessing the attached PDF file:

Online VM Labs for CompTIA Certs

Peeps, I'm having a tough time finding a place where I can create some online labs for CompTIA certs. It seems I can get free VMs in the cloud for a 12-month trial period from all of the big names, but I need a place that will never charge my students any money. I very often am teaching people who made it into an income-based program, so I cannot reasonably ask them to spend more money than they have.

It would seem simple enough to get people to do the labs locally through Oracle VirtualBox or through Hyper-V (if available), but we also run into the issue of having classroom computers that simply are not robust enough (typically lacking RAM) to do the job right. We also have the ongoing problem of labs in the books that require Windows Server 2012, Windows 10, and such, which are not free, although we can ask students to download trial versions.

I'm finding myself very frustrated by the books that came from the LOChoice acquisition, as they ask us to do labs that we cannot do, and the online downloads do not even include the instructor setup files. I'm hoping someone here can help me help my students.

Blog on Project Management and Cyber Security

I had a blog I wrote for CompTIA posted a few days ago on the importance of Project Management in Cyber Security and IT. Thought I'd share. :)

CompTIA ICT Educator

For those of you who didn't get the opportunity to attend a webinar presentation today by Mr. Stephen Schneiter and Mr. Kirk Smallwood, you missed quite a treat. These gentlemen provided some rock-solid information even for the most seasoned CompTIA Academy Partner and CompTIA Instructors. The title of the webinar was "CompTIA ICT Educator". If there is a recording made of this presentation, you'll definitely serve yourself, and your students, very well if you have a look. Great, great job Mr. S and Mr. K!

Channel Community NL?

Hi all,

Today, I received a mail from the UK Channel Community,
I was wondering: is there a community like this for The Netherlands?

On a side note, together with a Comptia Partner here in The Netherlands, I really want to boost Comptia trainings and getting more involved with Comptia,
so everything that helps to reach that goal helps :)

best regards,
Frederik Vos

Forum Request: For Post-Secondary Institutions

Hello -
So I put this up on the webinar this morning - I would really love to see a specific forum out here that is aimed at Post Secondary institutions. Maybe there isn't enough traffic to warrant such a thing, but I'd love to have regular discussions with my fellow professors/instructors, content and curriculum developers, and the like when adapting CompTIA material for academic and college credit. It might help with getting our students better prepared for certification.

Y'see, this morning, on the webinar, we heard that many post-secondaries out there have programs for academic outcomes in IT and Cyber, but they don't have the hands-on skills. Much of this is resource or internal curriculum based. But there has to be a way to have our cake and eat it too, right? Making sure we can properly deliver content in a college setting while making sure students are being prepared for certification, managing expectations, so-on and so forth.

Is this something that can be a thing?

Making the Case - CySA/PenTest level certs for entry level IT personnel

So, the question that that I will post as my inaugural question to CIN is:

Does CySA+ and PenTest+ make sense for the student in the 0-2 year space? New, freshmeat candidates coming into the field, stacking up ITF+, A+, Net+, Sec+ - yes, it's pretty justifiable. But what about the next level - CySA and PT? So far, what I've heard is that incident management is becoming more of a mainstream competency, which isn't so much covered in Sec+, but is heavily covered in CySA.

Thoughts?

Exam results via Paper or On-line

Hello everyone, When my students take a certification exam, they are required to bring back their exam results that are printed out at the PearsonVue testing center so they can get credit for taking the certification exam. However, today one of my students were not given a print out and was told they had to go on-line to get their exam results. Then about an hour later a second student was at the same testing center, and they received a print out. Does anyone know if CompTIA is now moving to providing exam results on-line and no longer printing them out at the testing center?

Microsoft Windows 7 End of Life Announcement

All good things must come to an end. Here is the announcement from CERT today.
Original release date: October 17, 2019

Summary
On January 14, 2020, Microsoft will end extended support for their Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 operating systems.[1] After this date, these products will no longer receive free technical support, or software and security updates.

Organizations that have regulatory obligations may find that they are unable to satisfy compliance requirements while running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2.

Technical Details
All software products have a lifecycle. “End of support” refers to the date when the software vendor will no longer provide automatic fixes, updates, or online technical assistance. [2]

For more information on end of support for Microsoft products see the Microsoft End of Support FAQ.

Systems running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 will continue to work at their current capacity even after support ends on January 14, 2020. However, using unsupported software may increase the likelihood of malware and other security threats. Mission and business functions supported by systems running Windows 7 and Windows Server 2008 R2 could experience negative consequences resulting from unpatched vulnerabilities and software bugs. These negative consequences could include the loss of confidentiality, integrity, and availability of data, system resources, and business assets.
