Project+ Vouchers Gone Out - Inflate my Ego

Okay, CIN - Looks like those Project+ vouchers have gone out to those of you that were on for my Proj+ TTT! Good luck to all of you!

Now, in a shameless post, you get to inflate my ego. This is the part where we find out if the TTT was helpful/instrumental in getting you to that shiny Project+ cert. So if you pass, post it here! If I did something really right, let me know.

And if you don't get it, it's okay! Keep at it - I'll help if you need it, meanwhile, if there was something about my training that wasn't so good, please tell me that, right here publicly, even. No instructor can improve if he does everything right, yeah? And I love to improve myself too. Or as a verse from the Good Book says, "As iron sharpens iron...". This is how we make CIN instructors the best ones out there. So, bring your eggs and tomatoes - I can handle it.

It was a pleasure having all of you on for the TTT and I sincerely wish you good luck as you all start certifying!

Just Released - Kali Purple - "Leveling the playing field"

Offensive Security released Kali 2023.1 or 'Kali Purple'; a distro aimed at Blue and Purple team members (great Security+ question) with a renewed focus on 'defensive' security. While this is a new release of Kali this 'purple' distro includes new tools specifically for network defenders.

Bleeping Computer has a great article describing the release.

I've yet to download and build an image. I hope to create a VM before the end of next week.

CIN The Pulse: Separating the signal from the noise: The current state of the IT (and data) workplace

Students preparing to enter the workforce are working hard – they're studying for and earning CompTIA certifications. They’ve seen the signal you have sent as an instructor: There are great IT careers available. But, given all of the “noise” we’re hearing lately about the IT jobs market , students are naturally wondering if there really will be a job available for them once they’ve finished. Research from CompTIA and many other credible sources worldwide demonstrate that we’re experiencing a worker shortage. Popular media presents a picture that tech jobs are on the decline. So, how can we help students separate the signal from the noise when it comes to the current – and future – IT job market?

Join Dr. James Stanger, Chief Technology Evangelist for CompTIA, as he provides you with some solutions. He’ll present research about current workforce trends, as well as report what he’s been hearing from hiring managers in the U.S. and worldwide. James will discuss:

  • Data-driven resources that provide evergreen information about hiring and employment trends
  • The state of the workplace, including what “remote work” means these days
  • Skills that make students a “good risk,” from the perspective of the hiring manager
  • Available jobs and careers beyond the typical “tech sector” perspective

CIN Sneak Peek Series: CompTIA CySA+ CS0-003

The next release for CompTIA CySA+ will be available in June of 2023. Join the CompTIA Instructor Network and special guest Hod Berman as he takes a Sneak Peek into changes with the new exam vs. the current version. We will discuss how to cover the content with students and suggest various labs to let students gain hands-on experience as they prepare for certification.

CompTIA Cybersecurity Analyst (CySA+) is an IT workforce certification that applies behavioral analytics to networks and devices to prevent, detect and combat cybersecurity threats through continuous security monitoring.

As attackers have learned to evade traditional signature-based solutions, such as firewalls and anti-virus software, an analytics-based approach within the IT security industry is increasingly important for organizations. CompTIA CySA+ applies behavioral analytics to networks to improve the overall state of security through identifying and combating malware and advanced persistent threats (APTs), resulting in an enhanced threat visibility across a broad attack surface. It will validate an IT professional’s ability to proactively defend and continuously improve the security of an organization. CySA+ will verify the successful candidate has the knowledge and skills required to:

  • Leverage intelligence and threat detection techniques
  • Analyze and interpret data
  • Identify and address vulnerabilities
  • Suggest preventative measures
  • Effectively respond to and recover from incidents

Passed Pentest+ this afternoon

It was a good exam, and very straightforward. The simulations were excellent.
I liked it more than CySA+ and CASP+ (although CASP+ was a lot of fun).

It definitely helps to do it right after teaching an ethical hacking course while the tools, process, and concepts are fresh in your mind. All I did was use the certification objectives as a knockdown list (Googling the odd thing I didn't recall).

But most importantly, I'm happy to say that I've now used every single voucher I got from the TTT sessions these past few years (and passed each exam too!). In my opinion, this is the biggest benefit for CIN members - I don't think I would have written as many of these exams otherwise, and it's important that our students see us write them - because if we write them, they will write them.

CompTIA A+ Class Materials (what to use?)

We will soon begin teaching A+ here at my college and offering it as credit courses and I am wondering what materials other A+ instructor use in class. Do you use a 3rd party? I would like to use the official Learn & Labs because I believe if your going to pass a certification exam the best place to learn the material is from the people making the exam.

If you do use the CompTIA materials, what do you include? Both Learn & Labs. Do you have students purchase the CertMaster Practice also? Do you find the CompTIA supplied slides sufficient?

If a 3rd party, who do you use?

Thank you in advance for any feedback/advice,

j

  • Question
Docker container training

Hello everyone,

Does anyone know of any step-by-step labs or website training that teaches
what needs to be done to log into, start, and use a Docker container on a Linux
system?

It is easy to find explanations of how Docker works but so far I'm unable to
get any real training on doing it start to finish.

Thank you,
Mike
