CompTIA Product Dev Team wants to hear from you

Do you have a crazy story about a server closet? Can you think of a time someone rolled a 1 on proper software management? Come sit by me!

The CompTIA product development team is looking for your anecdotes, examples, and real-life stories. If you have a tale of working the help desk, or the weird thing you found while running cable, we want to hear about it. We plan to use these stories within CompTIA training courseware, supporting instructional concepts, illustrating ideas, and of course grabbing learner attention.

If you want to share your story (or stories!), please complete this waiver first (the waiver must be completed or I cannot use your story) and email me ([email protected]) or share below.

Some of the topics we're looking for are:
  • When tech goes wrong -- situations of ignorance, when someone didn't understand what they were doing (could be an end user, could be a new professional)
  • Not properly securing personal data -- what happens when people don't take care of their personal data, or give it out willingly
  • Security tools in practice -- misuse of any cybersecurity tools (firewalls, NIDS/IPS, hardware, anything), trying to convey that the security tool isn't the only factor- a human has to properly use the tool
  • Wildest networking stories -- what have you found while dropping cable, what have you had to fix, where is the weirdest place you've seen for a server closet?
  • Networking specifications -- what happens when people don't pay attention to small wireless network specs? What can go wrong when you don't adhere to the network specifications?
  • Software management -- what happens when someone downloads software from a suspicious source? Could be an end user, could be a professional
  • Back it up -- perils of not backing up data, what has been lost? Personal stories (a college paper) and enterprise level are welcome

We will credit you either with your first name, last initial, and job role, or with "Anonymous, Job Role" as you prefer.

These stories will be used in one or more CompTIA training courses and may be edited for clarity and/or brevity.

CompTIA Product Team Survey

The CompTIA Product Development team is looking for feedback from the CIN community! They have asked if I could post the following request. Please take a few minutes and respond to their survey.

We've had requests from instructors to be able to do testing using a locked-down browser. If you have experience using locked-down browsers, please take a few minutes to answer this 4-question survey about your experience. Thank you!

Over several months in 2024 I will be conducting a series of polls of the CompTIA Instructor Network (CIN) Community. Participation is completely voluntary and based on the assumption that respondents are Instructors (i.e. members of CIN). My goal in conducting these polls is to compile data about how Instructors work. Each poll will have a simple question and be conducted over 14 days. At the end of each month, I will disclose the poll results to the CIN Community. From time to time, I will publish summaries containing data gathered in the series.

Practical AI for Instructors

As a follow-up from our CIN Instructor Toolbox webinar about how AI may be incorporated into course delivery, I thought we could keep the conversation going here in the community. Do you have a best practice for using AI in your course? Do you have examples or prompts you would like to share? Do you have an AI resources you would like to share? Maybe you have a question about using AI in the classroom. Let's talk about it here.

Looking forward to sharing! If you missed the webinar, you can view the on-demand session.

Just Starting Out, Looking for Guidance

Good morning all, I'm looking to start a CompTIA training cell with my company and I'm just looking for some general guidance. I taught A+, Network+, and Security+ while I was on active duty in the Marine Corps for about 3 years. I've since transitioned to civilian life and I see the opportunity to expand the company I work for into the CompTIA training sector in our region. I have attended various formalized instructor trainings through the military but I'd still like to attend a TTT if possible. Also, I've contacted CompTIA about becoming a delivery partner, I hope that works out too!

Is there anything you guys would recommend that someone just starting out should do? I have the classroom experience teaching and the certifications and education. I've never done any kind of sales or business development though.

TIA

-Logan

Passed CompTIA CySA+!

I am glad to report I passed CompTIA CySA+ today. I set a high bar for myself by taking the CySA+ rather than the Security+ and my score was just barely above passing, but a passing grade is a passing grade, right? :D

Alas, I never did get the two vouchers that were promised to me for attending the Security+ and CySA+ Train-the-Trainer sessions, but a co-worker of mine was able to get me a voucher through another contact they had at CompTIA. So if you're still waiting, maybe try another avenue or bug a colleague with good connections!

Tech+ FC0-U71

Curious. Is anyone teaching IT Fundamentals and looking to move to the new Tech+? I am putting together a Sneak Peek for the new Tech+ and looking for a lead instructor. If you would like to share your experience and discuss the differences between the new course with your fellow CIN members, DM me, and let's connect.

701 content question (answer for exam or job interview)

If the question shown below were asked in a job interview, which answers would you advise students to select? Would your advice be the same if the question were on the 701 cert exam? Given the definition of "cryptographic algorithm" in the 701 manual, I don't know which answers would be scored as correct on the 701 exam.

Question:
Laws and regulations require your organization to use cryptographic algorithms to secure some data. Which of these are cryptographic algorithms? (Select all that apply)

Answers:
A. Hashing
B. Encoding
C. Decoding
D. Encryption
E. Decryption

Control Categories (Operational vs Managerial)

I noticed a lot of discussion about how Comptia determines the differences between Managerial and Operational Controls?
On example is Awareness Programs (Training) because depending on the author, some categorize them as Managerial while others consider it as an Operational Control.
What are your thoughts? and what are your recommendations on how to better explain this to students (and even to explain them why testout content differs from most internet sources)?
