Teaching Opportunities during AY 2024-2025

Hi Everyone-

IESEG School of Management will be starting a Masters in Cybersecurity Management in Sept 2024. While the courses aren't cert prep per se, they are aligned with certification and we expect the students to earn two certs. Therefore, I will probably be needing some certified instructors for a few courses (e.g., Pen Testing).

So, if you might be interested in teaching for us (in English) in Lille, France, please touch base with me at EMEACon or send me your CV at [email protected]. As we are AACSB accredited, our instructors must meet AQ requirements (PhD active in research or Masters and active practitioner). For vacataire/adjunct positions, we would probably be most interested in folks from the BeNeLux and possibly UK&I community (i.e., commuting distance). For visiting positions (intensive - 16h over 4 days), other regions could work.

Hoping to meet some of you at EMEACon.

  • Question
High School Cybersecurity Students going for Security+

Hi everyone,

I currently teach a full-year (182 school days, 40 minutes per day) class in Cybersecurity at my high school. The students are doing a course for college credit from a university. The course as it exists currently is therefore not aligned with Security+, but we're hoping to have some students who want to go for the certification do so.

There is of course some intersection, my university-level course does cover malware, threat assessment, security policies, I do some linux, etc. but I have concerns for how the students will do. I can have them practice material from CompTIA but I know I'll be very pressed for time if I'm covering the college-credit course essentials and also focusing on Security+.

Does anyone have specific experience along these lines? High schoolers going for Security+ and in a course that doesn't 100% focus on that exam specifically?

Thanks in advance!

  • Question
Purchasing Vouchers For Government or Non-Profit Orgs

Hello All I'm not entirely sure if this is really the right platform to ask this question, but I figured most of us on here are Instructors and have a need to purchase vouchers for exams. Working for Government or Non-Profits creates minor headaches when it comes to acquiring products or services for the first time. You need x number of quote (unless sole provider) and must accept tax exemption etc.
That all said, I recently mounted all my CompTIA Certs on my office wall, which has inspired a bunch of my team to pursue certifications of their own. I can assist with tutoring them but I need to look at purchasing the vouchers etc.
Are there specific vendors that cater for vouchers or do they all come direct from CompTIA?

Any pointers would be greatly appreciated.

mnemonics

From the TTT, I learned this cool mnemonic "I Eat Three Eggs In Virginia Daily"
  1. Identify the problem
  2. Establish a theory
  3. Test the theory
  4. Establish plan of action
  5. Implement the solution
  6. Verify full system functionality
  7. Document the findings
Thanks to LarryG for sharing!
I'll probably change Virginia to Victoria, for my end. haha!

What other mnemonics do you use in your class?

Haven't Received Email Confirmation for Passing A+ Core 2

Everyone,

Hi. I passed A+ Core 2 on July 18. However, I have not yet received the email confirmation of this. From the email, you can accept your digital badge and have your certification posted on LinkedIn. Does anyone know what I need to do to get this confirmation? It does show that I passed on my CompTIA profile. Thank you.

Linux Malware

I downloaded a malware binary for Linux lately and unpacked it. Tried to run it as root, but it didn't work. Googled for 2 hours and found out that instead of /usr/local/bin, the malware unpacked to /usr/bin, for which it doesn't have any write permissions. I found a patched .configure and .make file on some Chinese forum, recompiled and re-ran it, but the malware said it needed the cmalw-lib2.0 library, which ships with CentOS but not Ubuntu. Googled for hours again and found an instruction to build a .deb package from source and installed it. The malware finally started, wrote some logs, wrote a core dump, and crashed. After 1 hour of going through the logs I discovered the malware assumed an underlying ext4 filesystem and tried to call its disk encryption API (which is deprecated under the btrfs filesystem I use) - the kernel noticed and made the partition read-only to the process. So I got fed up, opened the sources, grep'ed the Bitcoin wallet and sent $5 out of pity.

And this is the typical Linux malware experience.
Pretty scary if you ask me...

What's in your Toolbox for Network+?

I manage the Infrastructure Pathways product development at CompTIA, which from a ProdDev standpoint starts with Network+. CTT+ Virtual Classroom Trainer Recording Requirements

Hey, all!

I'm on my way to completing the CTT+ and am in the process of getting a good recording of a session. I taught a session that I'm really proud of, but I noticed that the chat does not show up within the recording. Is it a requirement for the TKO-203? If it is a requirement, does anyone know how to make sure it is picked up within the recording on Zoom?

Thanks for any assistance!

CompTIA Xpert series certifications 2024

CompTIA reveals roadmap for Xpert Series product family

Jul 31, 2023

New expert-level certifications, learning products and training curricula planned for 2024
DOWNERS GROVE, Ill. – CompTIA, the world’s leading certifying body in information technology (IT), announced today it is developing a new series of expert-level certifications and learning products in data, cybersecurity and cloud networking.
The CompTIA Xpert Series certifications are scheduled for release throughout 2024. The certifications are intended for IT professionals with multiple years of work experience who are interested in validating their expert-level knowledge of business-critical technologies.
“Each certification exam will validate deep expertise in job roles recognized as being at the expert level,” said Thomas Reilly, chief product officer, CompTIA. “Beyond validating technical skills, IT pros who earn a CompTIA Xpert Series certification will have demonstrated their ability to understand, implement and articulate advanced technology solutions in any business environment.”
The CompTIA Xpert Series will debut with three certifications.
CompTIA DataX, an advanced-level data science credential.

CompTIA CloudNetX, intended for advanced network and systems architects who design and manage complex, hybrid IT infrastructures.

CompTIA SecurityX, the next iteration of the current CompTIA Advanced Security Practitioner (CASP+), aimed at security architects, senior security engineers and others responsible for an organization’s cybersecurity readiness.
“The first set of Xpert Series certifications will establish a foundation for a broader expansion into expert-level credentials and learning,” Reilly said. “This may include additional CompTIA certifications, CompTIA training for credentials issued by other organizations or training on expert-level skills that may not be associated with a specific certification.”
Two IT professionals who are participating in the certification development process as subject matter experts believe the CompTIA Xpert Series will be welcomed by the IT community, especially among mid-level and advanced level professionals.
"The Xpert Series exams are a great addition to CompTIA's portfolio,” said Alex Cher, who has worked in IT and cybersecurity since 2006. “CompTIA has an advanced-level certification in cybersecurity, so it makes sense to create similar, advanced exams for infrastructure and other certification categories. The Xpert Series will perfectly fill that void."
“Ongoing career professional development by gaining new skills and experiences is vital to anyone working in IT,” said Riaz Khimji, who heads the IT Support Staff Services and Business Relationship Management Collegiate IT, at the University of Oxford. “Individuals can be even more successful in their current role and gain further knowledge in other areas of interest as they progress in their careers. Certifications such as those offered by CompTIA allow them to validate their newly acquired skills.”
CompTIA is also developing learning resources and training curricula aligned with the Xpert Series certifications. Learn more at https://www.comptia.org/certifications/xpert-series.
