Updated retirement date????

I just saw on the CompTIA subreddit that Professor Messer said that the 1001/1002 retirement has been pushed back to October 20th instead of it being August 31st like the 1101/1102 said. Is that true? Not that I don't trust Professor Messer, but just want to make sure. Thanks so much!

Seeking Job Seeker Advice

Fellow CINers,

I'm working on a project as part of the NICE Modernizing Talent Management working group. We're developing guidance for entry level job seekers in the cyber security field. I'm seeking your thoughts and advice based on what you tell your students.

#1) How do you define and describe the term ‘entry-level’ for technical, non-technical, and transitional military cybersecurity roles, regardless of age (consider career pivots)?

#2) If your student can put in the work and attain a Security+ or a Network+ (entry level) certification; how does that relate or 'count' as experience?

#3) Thinking about your most successful (in terms of employment) entry level certification student; what made them successful?

Thanks in advance for your input!

Brian

CompTIA Instructor Rep

I am a member of the CompTIA instructor network and am a Platinum partner at the CompTIA Store. I am actively teaching / tutoring for Security+, CASP+ and Network+ as an independent contractor through two companies. I am interested in understanding what partner ability I have to get discounts for my students or access to student manuals for my students. I have called a couple of CompTIA phone numbers this morning and no one has been able to help. I believe that I should have a CompTIA representative that I can reach out to as an instructor who can help answer my questions. How do I find out who that person is and contact them? Thank you!

Question of the Week #8 - Answer

We had some awesome engagement on this question of the week and we will be reiterating some of the key facts in the comments because, well, you Instructors know your stuff ? - In CertMaster Learn, the ‘Impersonating’ button/feature is located on a student's profile in the Admin Dashboard and in the Boost Dashboard. When would an Instructor use this feature?

Let's start off by differentiating between being able to access the impersonation feature in the Admin Dashboard and the Boost Dashboard.

Admin Dashboard

If an Instructor has also been assigned the role of Institution Administrator, he/she will be able to use the impersonation feature by selecting the student from the Students tab and then selecting the Impersonate button on the top right of the screen. Also note, the reason we are able to impersonate a student from the Admin Dashboard is that Institution Admins are considered Managers/Mentors and are provided access to this feature should they not have an ‘Instructor’ leading the training.

Boost Dashboard

As an Instructor without the Institution Admin role, your landing page will be the Boost Dashboard and as such you will be able to impersonate your students by accessing your Student Report, then select the student and then choose the ‘Impersonate’ button on the top right.

When would an Instructor use this feature?

An Instructor would use this feature when their student requires assistance with a question/activity that they do not understand – the Instructor is able to access their profile and find the troubling item and assist the student through it.

Some students might be flying through the course, maybe missing an activity or two. Instructors/Mentors/Managers are able to keep a close eye on the progress the student is making and inform them that certain activities are outstanding, keeping the schedule of completed activities on track and maximizing the progress of the students.

Similarly, the Instructor is able to view the student’s instance and check whether the work they had confirmed as complete, had actually been done. Because our system updates twice a day the reporting might not update at the time at which the student has confirmed completion of an activity and so Impersonating them and confirming their progress directly is a great way of keeping your students on track.

Lastly, when you are starting out, this is a great way for you to see what the student sees. We do also have a great resource, the Clickable Demo Walkthrough, which focuses on the student's journey within their instance. You are able to click through at your own pace and get valuable insight on each step the student needs to take whilst completing their course.

***NOTE: ANY ACTIVITY THAT YOU PERFORM WITHIN YOUR STUDENT'S INSTANCE WILL ACCOUNT AS THEM DOING IT AND WILL BE FED INTO THEIR REPORTING.***

Cloud Lab

Does anyone have a 30 to 60-minute lab on "Cloud" basics? I was thinking of having students launch some AWS resources (free tier). Does anyone have something you can share on building / launching / managing cloud resources to put their learning into practice? This is for my 16 and 17 year old A+ students.

Question of the Week #8

Happy Monday everyone! Who's ready for our 8TH Questions of the Week? Here it is:

Canvas Course for A+

Hi everyone,

I'm a high school teacher who started ITF+ this year. Our district uses CANVAS LMS, so I used Steve Linthicum's ITF+ Canvas course as a base to build out the course. I've been adding on so that meets the requirements of school and district. Its still a work in progress, but I am extremely thankful for having something to build upon so I didn't have to start from scratch.

Next year it looks like the district is stepping up to have me teach A+. Does anyone have a built out Canvas course for A+ they would recommend by linking to, or attaching here?

Thank you very much for any support you can give.

Diversity

According to studies:

Women only make up 24% of the cybersecurity workforce in the United States.
African-Americans only make up 9% of the cybersecurity workforce in the United States.
Hispanics only make up 4% of the cybersecurity workforce in the United States.
There is also a huge disparity of age groups, with more cybersecurity staff members older than 40 than staff members younger than 40.

What are your organizations doing to promote greater diversity? And for the non US-based CIN members, do your organizations experience diversity issues or not?

Question of the Week #7 - Answer

It’s Friyay Answer Day!

Our question was: The Instructor does not see the progress of individual students in the “Boost Dashboard”. What could be the cause of this and how can this be remedied so that you can see the analytics for your students?

There are a variety of scenarios around the reasons an Instructor might not see the progress of their individual students in the “Boost Dashboard”.

Groups
If the student is not tied to the Instructor in a Group, the Instructor will not be able to see the reports of the Group/’classroom" and students tied to it. In order to create your Group or ‘classroom’ simply navigate to the Groups tab on the left navigation bar, select it and then select ‘New Group’. For Group name, we recommend you choose the naming convention that is best suited to your Organization or something that is identifiable within your organization. If you, as an Instructor, do not have Institution Admin rights (assigned the Institution Admin role) then the Institution Admin would be the one setting up the Group/’classroom’. Creating Groups is an Administrative function and as such, you would need to have the Institution Admin role assigned to you in order to complete this function.

Instructors access / User Roles
As mentioned above, as an Instructor you will need to be linked to your students within a Group in order to see the reporting for those students. In this instance, the Instructor would only be able to see the reporting for the students within that Group. If there are 50 students within the Institution and the Instructor is tied to 20 students via the Group feature, then the Instructor would only be able to see the reporting for those 20 students within his Group / ‘class’.

Supervisors access / User Roles
The Institution Supervisor does not need to be within a Group to view the reporting and they are not limited to only a few students. An Institution Supervisor has the ability to see the reporting for ALL students within the Institution. The only reason an Institution Supervisor would not see the reporting within the Boost Dashboard is if the Student has not made progress in their course work.

Student progress
If a student hasn’t made any progress in their course there will be no data to filter into the Boost Dashboard. If a student has confirmed that they had made progress in their course and you do not see any analytics for that student in the Boost Dashboard, you can do 2 things:
  • Ensure that the platform updates have taken place. You would see ‘Date is accurate as of:’ at the top right of your screen. Our system updates twice a day at 3 am and 5 pm CST.
  • Impersonate the Student. This feature will allow you to view the Student's instance and check whether the work that they had confirmed as complete, had actually been done.
And that is it! Have a lovely weekend everyone!
