Cybersecurity history

A while ago, I found an old Wiley Cybersecurity book from the early 90s and decided to see what has changed from then until now.
I did up a short blog post on the similarities and differences here: https://jasoneckert.github.io/myblog/cybersecurity-in-the-90s/
I'm posting it here as it may make for a fun extra resource when teaching a Cybersecurity course.

Cybersecurity Lunch n' Learn

I had the opportunity to do a Lunch n' Learn with a local dentist's office. I raised cybersecurity awareness on various topics such as small business data protection best practices, social engineering, working from home, various flavors of malware, and social media.

District of Columbia: Looking for Adjunct Faculty for CompTia Certifications

Nationally more than 50% of jobs require skills training beyond a high school diploma, but not at the level of a bachelor’s degree. In terms of the local landscape, more than 90% of DC residents over the age 25 possess a high school diploma while about 50% possess a bachelor’s degree. These data make clear the need for DC to continue its work of increasing workforce development offerings that provide residents with occupational skills training that leads to nationally recognized credentials needed to enter or advance in the highly skilled workforce within the DMV region.

The Chart Academy, launching in the spring of 2022, will respond to the call to close the gap between the number of skilled jobs and the number of qualified professionals by providing access to education and professional career development in the areas of information technology, healthcare, early childhood education, and environmental services.

The Information Technology Instructor (Adjunct Faculty) opportunity will provide passionate, tech savvy educators with space and resources to mentor, create, and deliver innovative online and in-person instruction. The incumbent will be offered the opportunity to also engage in process improvement strategies for student success and share in the connection to developing partnerships with the community and individuals. A great opportunity to be part of a team embarking on next generation higher learning

Instructor Feedback Requested - focus group opportunity

Hi everyone, I'm researching ways to improve CompTIA's instructor resources offer, and I'd love to have your input.

I'm scheduling two focus groups to discuss the following:
  • How instructors use our existing instructor resources.
  • Which resources instructors wish we would include.
  • What new resources we have currently in development.
Please take a look at the form (https://app.smartsheet.com/b/form/a57f065fa77d4a09bea18cbcd951a360) and sign up for either of our 1-hour focus groups to share your experiences. Thank you!

Question of the Week #7

Hi Everyone. We would love to see some more engagement on our Question of the Week #7, and here it is:

The Instructor/Manager/Mentor does not see the progress of individual Students/Learners in the “Boost Dashboard”. What could be the cause of this and how can this be remedied so that you can see the analytics for your Students/Learners?

  • Question
Teaching Tips

I'm looking for extra part-time teaching opportunities for a little extra income any suggestions on places to look?
I teach CompTIA cert classes at work usually twice a year for 6 weeks at a time so I'm looking for part-time opportunities.
Also, slide decks: Create my own or use CompTIA templates....assuming there are CompTIA templates available?

Thanks!

Question of the Week #6 - Answer

Happy Weekend everyone! Question of the Week #6 was: Within CertMaster Learn can the Instructor also be assigned the role of Institution Admin/Supervisor? If so, how would this role be assigned to you?

Yes. The Instructor can be assigned the role of Institution Admin and/or Supervisor. These assignments are at the discretion of the Institution.

The Institution Admin would be able to assign the role of Institution Admin or Institution Supervisor to an Instructor.

Institution Admin
The person who makes the organizational purchase of a CertMaster Learn Organization Business License will automatically be setup as an Institution Admin for their Institution. The Institution Admin role allows the user to setup all other roles in the platform, including other Institution Admins, Institution Supervisors, Instructors, and Students. Once this role is assigned, you will have the highest level role within the Institution.

Institution Supervisor
The Institution Supervisor role gives the user access to the Boost Dashboard and they are able to view the reporting in the same way as the Instructor, with one added benefit. They get to see the Reporting for the entire Institution as a whole.

Instructor
Instructors have access to the Boost Dashboard (CertMaster Learn reporting hub). Instructors will only see the data for the groups and students they manage directly unless they are assigned the role of Institution Supervisor. The Instructor would typically be the one who is teaching the course but can also be a mentor or manager or anyone who requires the oversight provided within the Boost Dashboard.

Again, these roles are assigned at the discretion of the Institution.

Is it beneficial to study for Core 1 and Core 2 together or separately?

Most of the courses I have seen combine the Core 1 and Core 2 material into a single course. Do you think there is any benefit for students to focus on Core 1 first and then Core 2 (after passing the Core 1 exam)?

Thanks in advance for your input,
Joe

CIN TTT Series: Data+ DA0-001 Begins March 8, 2022

Join the CompTIA Instructor Network as we welcome Cameron Dodd who will lead our Data+ DA0-001 TTT series. The series will consist of six sessions covering the Data+ exam domains. Cameron will teach the key cybersecurity concepts covered on the exam as well as hands-on activities with key technology tools used by data analytics professionals.

  • Question
Youngest ITF+?

An associate/student of mine just completed ITF+ along with his 8 year old daughter. She passed the test a couple of days before her 9th birthday (passed about 3 days ago). I know that CompTIA made a big deal a few years ago when a 12 year old was the youngest person to achieve A+ cert. Not looking for any hullabaloo but wondering if the good folks at CompTIA could check into the youngest ITF+ passer?

Thank you,

Comptia Exams

Recently the latest comptia Exams are testing on programming languages reading the output of a code or scripts in few programming languages. In official book or lab we don't have any info about it. For IT students it's easy for them to understand. But for non IT students even corporate people for example accounting or management people is quite hard for them to take up without knowing basic programming. We as trainer also having hard time explain to them when they ask why all this not in book but is tested in exam?

Is future comptia course going to be for IT students only?

My suggestion is add in a module to teach basic programming in our modules. Non IT Students will be able to answer the questions tested in exam.

The output from tools or OS is easy for students bcos they practice in lab and they have it in official book.

Programming languages?

CompTIA APPROVED National Guideline Standards for CompTIA Apprenticeships for Tech in the US

Hello Everyone,

As a follow-up to my previous message, CompTIA currently has DOL-approved National Guideline Standards for registered apprenticeship programs.

- Tech Support Specialist
- Network Support Specialist
- Cybersecurity Support Technician
- Tech Project Coordinator

You can download the NGS guidelines from our website: https://www.comptia.org/content/lp/apprenticeships-for-tech

CompTIA is working to partner with both "intermediaries" and to generate apprenticeship demand from employers. The tight labor market for IT talent is really driving interest in "apprenticeship" as an option! If you are not sure and just want to have a conversation, please let me know. Between our efforts on employer engagement and helping intermediaries launch their programs....we've made great progress.

Best,
Liz
