Passed Project+ last night!!

This has been on my radar since the TTT, but only just got around to taking it.

I want to thank @Rick Butler for an amazing TTT. This is what enabled me to pass this exam. For anyone that is looking to still take this, ALL the information is in the TTT to pass. I went back over the sessions before I sat my exam.

THANK YOU AGAIN, @Rick Butler

Certifications passing rates

Greetings,

I couldn't find in the CIN posts information about average passing rates of CompTIA certs in post-secondary institutions.
We finished 2023 Q2 with 65.2% average passing rate for CompTIA, MS365, AWS Cloud Practitioner and Azure certs.
Is it possible for anyone here to share some figures?

Best regards,

Juan

Not getting correct date on Completion Certificate

Hello All,

I have a problem with the 1101 TTT Series. I took all of them last year. This year I'm going through them again as things have changed and I want to take the Cert. exam. When I finish and pull up the Completion Certificate it has last years date. I have cleared all cache and cookies from the browser. The time and date on my computer is correct. Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you,
Mike

Comptia A+ ports Maze Game

Here is a fun game to help memorize A+ 1101 ports.
(there are some ports in the game that aren't on the U.S.A version of the test, but it still helps to use a process of elimination)

3rd Party Training Materials or Official CompTIA Learn & Labs

I'd like to ask why some trainers/colleges choose to use 3rd party training materials over CompTIA's official Learn & Labs and Practice. My thoughts are, since CompTIA is the certifying body, doesn't it make sense to use their materials? They are guaranteed to cover the necessary topics right?

With all the different 3rd party training options out there, what makes them better the CompTIA's? I know everyone wants to create their own and make some coin but I wouldn't go to a Chevy shop to fix my Ferrari. :) (I don't have a Ferrari) Maybe I would if I created my own study materials.......

I just ran an A+ class using L&L and it went great. Their supplied slides are crap and need a lot of mods but they flow with the lessons.

Thoughts anyone and thank you.

High School Teacher - New to A+

Hi All! My district is trying to provide students with as much opportunity as possible to earn industry certifications which is great especially for non college bound students. I am at a public high school in Colorado with 90 minute block periods - each class being a semester long. We are going to be using the TestOut curriculum program and I hope to get some old computers and devices to have students practice with. I will also be taking the test along with the first batch of students. The goal would be Core 1 in October at the end of Q1 and Core 2 in December at the end of Q2. Typically I teach programming but have taught networking in the past so some of the information will be new to me. Any words of advice or encouragement are welcome!

CySA/CASPs - Public Google Sheet - Anonymous APT Tracking

Was reading some news this morning regarding bias in reporting about cyber attacks originating in the West (the US doesn't hack does it??) when the author cited this little bit of fun reading:
Or as I heard it said, one person's government is another person's APT...

Happy Friday, y'all.

CompTIA Ireland / Europe Study Group

Hi all as a SME For CompTIA

I’m looking to start a study group to help train and support the next generation of IT Professionals in Europe.

I'm looking to team up with others in Ireland to get this going.

is there anyone here that would like to do This with me ?

just an FYI This is to help train others this is not a paid position but rather a Give Back position to help others.

The idea of this is to pass on the knowledge learned over the last 20+ years to others.

Kind regards
Matthew Browne CSIE CTT MVP

Will taking the new A+ 1101 & 1102 jeopardize my 2028 expiration date?

Hello everyone,

I have already passes CompTIA Security + 601 and Linux + XK0-005. Doing so has extended my A+ certification expiration date out to 2028.
If I go and pass the new 1101 and 1102 does that nullify my 2028 expiration date and only extend my A+ out three years from now?
Let me know if you need further clarification.

Thank you,
Mike

Building a Cyber Program: Risk Assessment vs. Cyber Frameworks

So here 's a question that came up in my head and one that I suggested to Bjoern after the session today. Worth some noodling...

When building a cyber program do you:

A) Get a framework? - Most times, people don't know what they don't know and they end up going out to the internet to grab some kind of checklist to "cover the bases" with respect to network security. Frameworks like NIST 800-53 and 800-171 as its checklist are great because they'll cover everything.

But a framework has the tendency for those who use one to cover more than we need. Do we pick and choose which parts to use? Can we say that we used the NIST framework if we only use a part of it? Going through a framework can create a lot of documentation that no one will ever read.

(kinda like all the documentation we write, but alas)

B) Perform a Risk Assessment? - The risk assessment is the way an organization can tailor its cyber program to meet its specific needs. An organization can walk through all its assets and services and define priorities.

However, I've always seen two things when doing a risk assessment. One, the defining the risk tends to get subjective. We can put impact to a cost scale, but probability is a little more nebulous. Say you have two incidents on a risk in year 1, none in year 2, and none in year 3. High risk? Medium risk? Or do we define it ourselves in a subjective kind of way. Sure that brings in the idea of risk appetite, so its different for everyone. The other thing I see in risk assessment is making sure we've identified everything. Seems like that's an ongoing process, like one day, you're walking by an office and notice an IoT device that's been there for an age, but we forgot about it in risk planning.

So, what do you think about this? Chime in and let's see what you think.

/r

UPDATE: I might have also wrote the question a little badly - the question isn't whether we do those things - it's the approach you take first in doing a cyber program build. Some will go with the Framework first, which prescribes a risk assessment, the other will do the risk assessment first which prescribes a framework. ..
