Question about backups

Here is the question of the day. It's dealing with different types of backups. First, let's start with what we know.
- A Full backup backs up the files, then resets the archive bits to off so that it knows they've been backed up.
- An Incremental backup backs up the files with the archive bit set to on (meaning the file has been changed), then resets the bit to off for each file that has had changes.
- A Differential backup backs up all the files where the archive bit it set to on, but doesn't reset it to off, meaning it will back up everything where the bit is set to on, including files it has already backed up in any previous differential backups since the last full backup (since differentials do not reset the bit to off).
- Any file changes sets the bits to on. So either an incremental or differential will back up the changed files.
So here's the scenario:
- I do a full backup, change files, then do an incremental (which will backup the files, then change the bits back to off)
- I change no files over the next 24 hours, then I do a differential backup.

So here are the questions:
- How will the differential recognize the difference between the full and incremental backups because the bits are set to off for both cases?
- Will it copy since the last full backup or the last incremental?

False Positive/Negative in biometrics

Had a student miss a question today based upon information that does not appear in the SG or slides. It has to do with False Positive being synonymous with False Acceptance Rate. And while the definition (someone's biometric matching with the wrong person and possibly giving them unauthorized access), somewhat lines up, it isn't something they would be able to read and extrapolate. And for False Negative, it means that someone was denied access that should have been given access based upon proper credentials/biometrics, being synonymous with False Rejection Rate. My issue isn't the definitions, it is that this information is not presented to the students in a way that they would get the question correct, since we usually refer to False Positive/Negative in terms of vulnerability analysis and device alerts, and they don't quite line up with the biometrics in terms of their meanings. I added it as an addendum to make sure my students know these definitions now. Maybe I'm totally wrong though. I defer to the esteemed consensus of my fellow instructors.

A special thanks to @Rick Butler and @Stephen Schneiter . @Robert Bodnar some of your questions were answered. Additional explanations will be forthcoming. Until next time CINers...

ChannelCon / Partner Summit 2023: Thursday

Day Three: And yes, I got up for the gym. But the fitness center is pretty empty this morning so I have this distinct feeling that the Tao party last night turned today into a rest day for them.

No matter, let's get after it..

ChannelCon and Partner Summit 2023: Tuesday

Hello all of you fellow CIN'ers - coming to you from Las Vegas and the very first day of the conference. As I did last year, I will be posting throughout the day of what I encounter during the conference for those of you that were unable to make it.

I think there were some people who decided to go out running, but this old guy doesn't do that much anymore. So how about something uplifting instead...

A+ 1101 voucher request

Hello everyone,

I finished all of the 1101 Train the Trainer pre-recorded sessions on July 8th of this year. I understand that it takes two weeks after completion to get a voucher and that everyone at CompTIA is busy. Can anyone tell me about how long it took you to receive one so I know what to expect. I have the completion certificates from each session. Do I need to provide them to someone?

Thank you,
Mike

New to CompTIA - need help with purchase options

Hello,
I am offering a PC hardware/CompTIA A+ class in my high school and need help with how to identify the cost of the CertMaster products and what I need to purchase. I've downloaded the Academic Price List pdf, but I don't know if these prices apply to me, as an academic partner. I'm a bit confused, and submitting a help ticket didn't help.

I'm looking at the CompTIA Integrated CertMaster Learn + Labs for A+ Core 1 and Core 2 (220-1101 and 220-1102). I have 7 students in the class.

Can anyone help?
Thanks in advance.

Introducing urlscan dot io (for Security+ & CySA+)

Fellow Instructors,

In Security+ and again in CySA+ (and CASP+) students need to understand how the www works. I often use Virustotal dot com to briefly demo how to investigate suspect urls and files. I found another web based (free to use) tool that helps explain more. That's urlscan dot io. I should provide a hat tp to some of my SOC colleagues from LinkedIn who have been pointing at this for a few weeks.

urlscan.jpg
A user submits a url and urlscan goes off and scans the site. I chose to scan comptia.org.

Comptia_http.jpg
The scan returns info about the site and http transactions (with associated response codes). Note CompTIA dot org is being served (to me) via an IPv6 address in the USA. You can show all of the elements that make up a web page. You can show the site certificates and check their expiration. Another great capability is to show the DOM scripts served from the site to the client browser.

Comptia_DOM.jpg

Warning: Make sure that you scan the site in advance and develop your own 'script' about which fields you are going to share with students. There is a ton of info here and you want to avoid having students asking about each and every field.

That said I was able to turn this into a short (less than 10 minutes) demo that graphically links different concepts important to the course.

Enjoy!

Brian

2023 Partner Summit Roll Call - Who's actually going?

I'm thankful that things worked out where I'd be able to attend the Summit this year. Last year, I met a lot of great people, putting faces to names of folks that I've chatted with here, some I've missed that I wanted to meet.

So who is actually going this year?

I won't be that tough to find - just look for the silly guy with a black fedora - that will probably be me. But I want to meet as many of you as I can when I get there, so please, come find me, if I don't find you first.
